How to prepare for the job fair when you’re an introvert?

You get nervous at the idea of entering a room full of people? You tell yourself that you’re too shy? Are you convinced that you will not make a good impression on employers?

Here are some tips and tricks in prevision of the Job Fair :

Before the event

  • Prepare your outfit the night before to prevent you from changing your mind the day of.
  • Give yourself an attendance time objective.
  • Plan to go with a friend, encourage and challenge yourselves.
  • Set an attainable goal. If this is the first time you are going to this kind of event, meeting 10 employers seems like an insurmountable challenge. Target 2-3 employers depending on your interest and abilities.

Day of the event

  • Give yourself the right to walk around for the first time without talking to anyone. Observe and take the time to feel comfortable and target employers that are interesting to you. One of our strengths as introverts is taking the time to reflect and observe.
  • Stop at the bathroom. Check your outfit, take the time to elaborate a game plan and take 2-3 deep breaths. They will help you to reduce anxiety and recharge your batteries.
  • When the time to talk to employers comes, smile and give a firm handshake. Ask the questions you prepared.
  • Start your tour by the employer that interests you the least. It will be a good occasion to test your techniques and to readjust if necessary.
  • Change your negative thoughts into positive ones.
    • I will ruin my chances to find a good job. / I will get to know interesting companies.
    • I never know what to say. / It’s a good occasion to listen, observe and to learn more on the offered jobs and conditions.

Keep in mind that employers are there to meet you and talk. Enjoy!

After the event

  • Send a follow-up email and write a short thank you note.
  • Take note of the details you heard and observed that could be useful in a future interview.
